NEW DELHI: In response to a large number of requests from its learners, the National Institute of Open Schooling has extended its facility of on-demand examination to the senior secondary level for two subjects — physics and mathematics. From October 15, apart from the two rounds of examinations held for Open School students in April/May and October/November every year, those wanting to write their Class XII papers in physics and mathematics can also apply for on-demand examination. Until now the facility was available only for Class X. Of late, Open School has become popular with pilots of the Indian Air Force who want to branch out to commercial flying as well as those planning to join a flying training academy and want to appear in the plus 2 level in either physics or mathematics or both for better career prospects. “We have got a number of applications for enrolment in physics and mathematics under our part-admission programme, whereby anyone who at any stage of life wants to write an exam for up to four subjects of his or her choice for the purpose of updating knowledge can do so. Owing to an overwhelming demand from our learners who wanted to write the exams this year itself to be able to save one year, we decided to start this facility,” said NIOS secretary D.S. Bist. The provision will work on a first-come-first-served basis. The learners need to choose the dates for the on-demand examination that will be held at the Open School headquarters. The result will be declared within 30 days and the students will be given a marksheet. If the student is unable to clear the paper or wants to improve on the marks, he/she can apply again and appear any number of times. “This is just an additional facility for learners at the senior secondary level. If they feel they are confident and prepared to take the exam any time, they can opt for the new provision. “Otherwise they can appear for the paper in either April/May or October/ November that is held across the country. It is just about giving more choice to our students,” added Mr. Bist.
