dated September 26, 1957: Naga team meets Nehru

A nine-member Naga delegation met Prime Minister Nehru in New Delhi on September 24 for less than an hour. The leader of the delegation, Dr. Imkongliba Ao, handed over to Mr. Nehru the text of the resolution adopted by the Naga Convention at Kohima last month. The team members listened to the Prime Minister’s sympathetic views. Their principal object seems to be to ascertain Mr. Nehru’s reaction to their demand for the constitution of Nagaland into a separate Centrally-administered unit and not to discuss or negotiate anything. A few members of the delegation are familiar with the art of discussion or negotiation. The delegation is bound by the instructions given to it by the Kohima Convention. The members of the delegation are disinclined to express any views at this stage.
