Bad roads: State draws flak from court

Kochi: The failure of the government in repairing the roads in the State came under criticism from the Kerala High Court once again on Tuesday.

Justice S. Siri Jagan while dealing with the All Kerala Government Contractors Association’s petition orally observed that no effective steps had been taken to repair the roads.

The condition of the roads was pitiable. In fact, there had been no roads at all from Thrissur to Palakkad.

Though the government had undertaken that the repairs would be completed by August 31, nothing had been done. And, though Finance Minster T.M. Thomas Isaac had issued a statement that the roads would be repaired and action taken against corrupt officials in the Public Works Department, nothing concrete seemed to have been done, the court observed.

The petition filed by the association sought a direction to the State government and the Kochi Corporation not to divert Rs.50 crore allotted under the flood relief scheme from the Union government for any other purpose.

The petitioner also pleaded that a direction be issued to the State government to ensure that funds allotted under the flood relief scheme be paid to the contractors who had done road repair works in 2005 and 2006.

The petitioner alleged that the government and the corporation were trying to divert the funds.

The Judge directed the State government and the corporation to file affidavits within two weeks.
