Well done India

The Men in Blue have done it in style. The glorious win in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 cricket championship is a tribute to the talent and the never-say-die attitude displayed by the team over the past two weeks. The fact that the final victory came against arch rival Pakistan makes it doubly sweet.

A key factor that facilitated the victory was that there was no burden of expectations on the team. The players could just go and play their natural game, without worrying too much about the outcome.

An unbelievable victory. After tremendous wins over England, South Africa, and Australia, the team put it across Pakistan in a seat-edge thriller. The positive mindset of the youngsters in the team that allowed them to attack every bowler in the world is a refreshing sight. Yuvraj Singh’s 30-ball blitzkrieg that yielded 70 runs against the mighty Australians will remain in memory for long.

The glorious uncertainties of cricket were on full display on Monday. The match swung this way and that until the final climactic moment. A great way to finish the inaugural World Twenty20.

India deserves all the praise being heaped on it. However, Pakistan very nearly plucked a win from the jaws of defeat. Shoaib Malik’s men too deserve a word of praise for their gritty display. But for Misbah-ul-Haq’s ill-judged shot, India could have well lost the match and the championship.

A great victory for India that has enhanced its reputation. We hope many more such victories will come its way.

A great team effort by Dhoni and his men. Though the target set by the team, in the final, was modest, the bowlers’ excellent performance and good fielding helped the team triumph, bringing joy to lakhs of cricket loving Indians.

True to their rivalry, India and Pakistan made the final a memorable one.

Coming as it does in the backdrop of the team’s ignominious exit in the group stage during the World Cup in the West Indies a few months ago, the victory is great. That it came without the Tendulkars, the Gangulys, and the Dravids, and, in the absence of a regular coach, is significant.

The sensational victory will certainly help heal the wounds caused by the debacle in the Caribbean early this year.

Monday’s victory is worthy of being placed alongside the 1983 World Cup triumph in England and the 1985 World Championship victory in Australia, as Indian cricket’s landmark achievements.

In the final analysis, very little separated the victor from the vanquished, but what mattered was the triumph of the spirit of the game.

A wonderful team effort that will be savoured as much as the 1983 World Cup victory.

It was a night when every Indian, wherever he or she might have been, would have felt proud. Kudos to every member of the team.
