Corrections and clarifications

The third paragraph of a report “CPI(M) hits out at government” (September 25, 2007) was: “Condemning the ‘communal and divisive’ approach to the BJP and the Sangh Parivar on the Sachar Committee recommendations, they said the panel’s report had exploded the myth of minority appeasement by presenting scientifically collated evidence that showed that the minority communities, especially Muslims, faced deprivation and discrimination in myriad forms.” It should have been “Condemning the ‘communal and divisive’ approach of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar on the Sachar Committee recommendations …”, as given as a pointer in the accompanying infobox.

The strapline of a report “Study to probe extent of spurious drug industry” (September 20, 2007) was: “‘35% of drugs made in India no better than talcum powder’”. A reader points out that it was misleading as the third paragraph said: “When an article appeared in The Lancet in 2001 citing World Health Organisation statistics that 35 per cent of all drugs made in India were nothing better than talcum powder and, worse, that a fifth of these contained wrong or harmful substances, it unleashed a barrage of media investigations. The government found itself unable to counter these charges although the WHO denied the statistics in question.”

A Chennai-datelined report issued by PTI and carried by the online edition on September 21, 2007 with the headline “Sun TV group announces DTH services: cable operators protest” wrongly described Mr. Dayanidhi Maran as Union Minister. It should have been former Union Minister.

A cricket report “Pakistan storms into final” (“Sport”, September 23, 2007) said that Umar Gul came on after the 12th over and he has been doing this throughout the tournament. It was an error as Gul opened the bowling against India. (The report was on a Twenty20 World match.)

The ninth paragraph in a report “Outstanding effort: Vengsarkar, Amre” (“Sport”, September 22, 2007) should have been “He smashed 101 in the West Zone Twenty20 at the Brabourne Stadium in 45 balls (13 x 4s, 5 x 6s) and Mumbai qualified for the BCCI’s knock out competition”, and not “He smashed 101 not out against the West Zone Twenty20 ….” as was published.

A report “Jharkhand, Kerala claim title” (“Sport”, September 21, 2007) gave national high jump record holder Hari Shankar Roy’s old meet record as 2.14m, while the results column gave it as 2.18m. The results column is right. (The report was on the National inter-state athletics championship at Bhopal.)

A report “AC Milan, Real begin well” (“Sport”, September 20, 2007), published in some editions, should have read “Miika Koppinen flicked in a free cross for Rosenborg”, and not “for Chelsea” as was published.
