Strict action against cooking gas diversion

Staff Reporter

Meeting held to address cooking gas shortage in district

‘Cooking gas to be distributed as per seniority’

Thiruvananthapuram: District Collector N. Ayyappan has warned of strict action against liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) agencies which illegally divert cooking gas cylinders meant for domestic consumption.

Chairing a meeting called to address cooking gas shortage in the district, Mr. Ayyappan said several instances of illegal diversion of LPG cylinders had come to the notice of the district administration.

Delivery charge

Consumer representatives told the Collector that LPG distributors rarely gave receipts for cooking gas cylinders delivered home.

he supply men often charged excessively for cylinders under the pretext of exacting delivery charge. The Collector asked distributors to issue receipts to consumers with the delivery charge mentioned separately.

He said LPG agencies should go by seniority in booking while delivering cylinders. Customers should be issued a demand list number when they place their order for an LPG cylinder. Cooking gas should be distributed strictly according to seniority to prevent any kind of favouritism and excess charging of customers.

Gas stoves

LPG distributors, while issuing new connections, should not insist that the customers by gas stoves from them. LPG agencies would be held responsible for the misbehaviour, if any, of their cooking gas delivery men. The current price for a cooking gas cylinder is Rs.302.10. Cylinders should be delivered to customers within 21 days of the booking date.

No delivery charge should be exacted from customers if they live within 5 km of the gas agency.

The agency could charge Rs.16 extra if the cylinder is delivered within an area of 10 km. For 15 km, the delivery charge has been fixed at Rs.21, for 20 km Rs.26, for 25 km Rs.31 and for 36 km Rs.36.
