TIRUCHI: It was a rare opportunity for the undergraduates of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute at Navalur Kuttapattu near here to purchase books on agriculture and allied topics.

The two-day exhibition-cum-sale of books sponsored by the Indian Council of Agriculture and Research (ICAR), New Delhi, exposed the students to a wide range of topics from agricultural bio-technology to diagnostic virology, and from indoor gardening to major spices of India.

Classified into major topics such as ‘crop sciences’, ‘horticulture’, ‘animal sciences and fisheries,’ the exhibition brought to the door-steps of the students, a rare collection of books which most students went through for the first time.

The low-priced books brought out by the ICAR were student-specific. They also attracted the faculty members of the college. For instance, the book on ‘Drainage engineering’ should be of much importance to the students of the engineering branch, while ‘Technologies for Wasteland Development’ is bound to kindle the interest of students involved in soil reclamation.

‘The digital photo library’, another CD, is a collection of the ICAR’s photographs which have been digitised. This CD is useful to scientists, editors and authors.

“The ICAR has been conducting exhibition at the Agricultural colleges and institutes all over the country to motivate the students to update their knowledge and also to promote research activities,” says the Senior Sales Executive, ICAR, New Delhi, Bhupender Joshi.

The Dean of the College, S. Jebaraj, who inaugurated the exhibition, said that students would be permitted to purchase books of their choice and the sum would be collected in instalments along with hostel fees.

The Assistant Librarian of the College S. Thilakar pointed out that the exhibition attracted students from nearby colleges too.
