Couple, son commit suicide

Incident at a hospital after son was found terminally ill


Jestlin was suffering from leukaemia

He was undergoing treatment at Lakeshore hospital


KOCHI: In a tragic incident, a couple and their 15-year-old son committed suicide on Monday night at the Lakeshore Hospital here fearing the agony of their son, who was diagnosed to be terminally ill.

K.D. Dasan, wife Latha and their son Jestlin were found dead in the hospital room, where the boy was undergoing treatment.

Jestlin was being treated for a brain tumour and kidney failure, when he was diagnosed of suffering from leukaemia on September 18.

According to a hospital spokesperson, Jestlin had undergone a surgery for brain tumour and was recovering when his kidney functions started failing.

He was put on dialysis and was responding to the treatment, when his blood count started dropping. Following tests, it was confirmed that the boy was suffering from lymphatic leukaemia.

Philip Augustine, managing director of Lakeshore Hospital, said the family had a long discussion with oncologist V.P. Gangadharan on Monday evening about Jestlin’s illness.

The hospital staff discovered the bodies when they went to check a foul smell emanating from the room which was locked from inside. The spokesperson said that the nurse on duty had checked on the boy around midnight. It was when the manager on duty was checking the rooms around 2 a.m. that the incident came to light. The spokesperson said that the family might have consumed pesticide. Jestlin, hailing from Thrithalloor, Thrissur, was admitted to the hospital on August 20.

The family had consulted various hospitals and were on their way to Thiruvananthapuram, when Jestlin’s conditioned turned worse and was admitted to the Lakeshore Hospital. Dasan was a bus driver.
