Civic body to begin operation clean-up today

45 trucks pressed into service to remove debris on roads

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will begin clean-up of all roads near the Hussainsagar Lake early Wednesday morning by which it time all Ganesh idols will have been immersed.

The cleanliness drive actually began on Tuesday morning itself when it had pressed into service 45 trucks to remove garbage and debris accumulated on the roads.

The dredging work of removing some of the idols already immersed was also undertaken.

Precautionary step

Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) R. Rama Mohan Rao said the cleaning work was taken up as a precautionary measure so as to provide more space to the idols coming for immersion. But, the work had to be discontinued after 1 p.m. as the procession had picked up pace by then.

The move was initiated after reports reached the headquarters that there were a few anxious moments at the Saroornagar Lake when fresh idols were not getting immersed since all the available space near the banks was filled with debris of idols put in earlier.

After some kind of salvage operations, the immersion procession once again began without much of a problem. Mr. Rao said that special health and sanitation teams of about 250 personnel have been pressed into service besides the regular sanitary staff to sweep and remove the garbage near the Hussainsagar and other lakes.

In the meantime, taking advantage of the dry weather during the last two days, the corporation began road repair works at several thoroughfares in the twin cities by filling the crevices with bitumen. Officials said that it was a precursor to fresh carpeting of all roads before commencement of World Military Games in October.

Tenders finalised

“All the tenders have been finalised for road works to be taken up at a cost of Rs. 9 crore,” said a senior official.
