Local people protest against sand-mining
Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lorries ferrying illegally mined sand from the Pallithura, Pound Kadavu area were blocked by local people who were protesting against illegal sand-mining in these areas under the guise of cleaning and developing the Parvathy Puthanar. A press note issued here on Tuesday said hundreds of lorry loads of sand were being taken away from the sides of the Parvathy Puthanar. The effects of this on the areas near the canal could be catastrophic. The sand was being mined, in violation of the terms of the contract to clean the canal, with the connivance of government officials, the press note said.
The people were planning to organise a massive protest on this issue, it added.
