TAMBARAM: The trade union wing of Pattali Makkal Katchi has urged the State Government to make all workers on contract with the transport corporations as permanent employees.
A.K.Moorthy, State president of Pattali Thozhilaalar Sangam, said now, the workers were on contract with various divisions of the transport corporations. Their wages were revised only once in five years, causing hardship to the workers and their families, Mr. Moorthy said after opening branches of PMK’s trade union wing in the bus depots at Tambaram, Chromepet, Alandur and other places in the city suburbs. The only solution was to make all the one lakh-odd contract workers permanent, he said.
While welcoming moves to introduced air-conditioned buses in the city, he appealed to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation to reduce the fares of these services. On some long-distance routes in the city, the fare for a single journey was Rs. 40, he said.
The transport corporations should also remove the ceiling on Deepavali bonus for workers, Mr. Moorthy said.
