COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation Council passed a resolution on Tuesday banning the construction of multi-storeyed commercial complexes and also residential apartments up to 200 metres on either side of Race Course Road. The ban on construction has been imposed under Section 269 of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act, 1981 and the Town Planning Act, 1971. Race Course has the official residence of the District Collector, Inspector General of Police, Conservator of Forests, District Forest Officer and a number of top level officials. It also has houses of top industrialists of Coimbatore. This office-cum-residence area during the British Raj became the lung space of the city with an exclusive 2.5-km walkers’ path running parallel to the circular Race Course Road. Radial roads connect this stretch with Tiruchi Road, Avanashi Road, Arts College Road and Kamaraj Road. People living in Race Course use the walkers’ path in the morning and evening as part of their daily fitness schedule. In recent times, the Corporation’s attention had been drawn to the rise in the number of vehicles parked along the road. The increase in the movement of vehicles has polluted the atmosphere, Mayor R. Venkatachalam noted at the meeting. Multi-storeyed commercial and residential buildings are the cause of the congestion and the impact on the environment. When councillors R. Ramaswamy (Congress) and P. Krishnamurthy (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) expressed reservations over the ban, Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran responded firmly by saying that Race Course was the only lung space in the city. “This area needs to be protected. And, that is why the ban is essential,” he said.
