Surplus power in State due to the floods in the Krishna Transco sets aside 800 MW of installed capacity for sale to outside buyers HYDERABAD: For the second consecutive year, Andhra Pradesh is surplus in power due to the floods in the Krishna, which occurred as many as four times this season. As a result, the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTransco) on Monday began selling power to Delhi and other States through power traders as stipulated by the Electricity Act of 2003. It has set aside about 800 MW of installed capacity (approximately 20 million units) for sale to outside buyers. The supply to outside customers, however, is made mostly during off-peak hours (early hours and late nights) when the normal demand in the State falls. An overall fall in demand, caused by a steep decrease in agriculture and domestic loads following heavy rain, has encouraged APTransco to take the plunge. Of the 20 million units being sold, nearly 7.2 mu is going to Delhi, 4.8 mu to Kolkata and 2.4 mu each to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. The sale is routed through traders Power Trading Corporation, Reliance, BSES, NVVNL and Adani. The energy demand in the State fell to 145 mu on Monday from a peak of nearly 195 mu during summer. Being on a non-stop operation at full capacity, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar hydel stations are making a significant contribution of over 50 mu daily to the grid. Hydel generation this year so far has touched the 5,500 mu mark, which is 1,133 mu higher than the same period last year. Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs have huge storages which can produce over 3,000 mu of power.
