Poongothai appeals to visually handicapped

Poongothai

CHENNAI: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna on Tuesday appealed to the visually handicapped to give up their agitation planned from September 26.

In a statement issued here, she said that after the Karunanidhi government assumed office in 2006, it had revived schemes and launched a slew of welfare measures for the physically handicapped. This included giving the visually handicapped free talking software, hike in financial aid for marriage, hostel facilities, walking canes and appointment of 52 graduates as teachers and 38 persons as book binders in the Government Press.

The demands put forth by the associations were being considered in consultation with various departments. An agitation at this juncture was not required, she said, requesting them to give up their agitation plan.
