NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Neelotpal Das overpowered veteran Filipino GM Eugenio Torre to move into the shared third spot behind two Chinese leaders after the seventh round of the Asian chess championship at Cebu City, the Philippines on Tuesday. The victory took Neelotpal Das to five points, half-a-point behind 11th-seeded Chinese, Zhao Jun, who defeated Parimarjan Negi, and second seed Zhang Pengxiang, the conqueror of overnight leader Indonesia’s Susanto Megaranto. The results: Seventh round (involving Indians): Parimarjan Negi (4.5) lost to Zhao Jun (Chn, 5.5); Zhou Jianchao (Chn, 5) bt G.N. Gopal (4.5); Eugenio Torre (Phi, 4) lost to Neelotpal Das (5); Deepan Chakkravarthy (4.5) drew with Abhijit Kunte (4.5); Sandipan Chanda (4.5) bt Tu Hoang Thong (Vie, 3.5); Surya Shekhar Ganguly (4) bt P.D.S. Girinath (3); G. Rohit (4) bt Sami Khader (Jor, 3); S. Arun Prasad (3.5) bt Homayoon Toufighi (Iri, 2.5); M.R. Lalith Babu (2.5) drew with Voltaire Sevilano (Phi, 2.5); Lanka Ravi (1.5) lost to Efren Bagamasbad (Phi, 2.5).
