NEW DELHI: World No. 12, the former U.S. Masters and U.S. PGA champion Fiji’s Vijay Singh will be the star attraction of the $2.5 million Johnnie Walker Classic golf championship to be held at Gurgaon’s DLF Golf and Country Club from February 28 to March 2, 2008. This will be first event in the country’s golf history to be jointly sanctioned by the European, Asian and Australasian Tours. This is also the second European Tour event to come to India next year. The Delhi Golf Club here is gearing up to host the $2.5 million Indian Masters from February 7 to 10, 2008. India will be the eighth country to host the Johnnie Walker Classic since the inception of the event in 1990. South Africa’s Anton Haig won the last event in Phuket, Thailand, for his first European Tour title. The previous winners include, Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Ian Woosnam, Retief Goosen and Adam Scott. Vijay Singh, winner of over 50 professional titles, has been quoted by the organisers as saying, “I began my professional career in Asia so I am excited to be returning to my old stamping ground.” The 44-year-old has played at the DLF Golf and Country Club twice before in the one-day skins competition. — Special Correspondent
