‘Goshalas’ rake in profit in Chitradurga

Staff Correspondent

Drought had made fodder procurement difficult

Eight ‘goshalas’ set up in the district

Novel venture: A ‘goshala’ at Kudapur village of Challakere taluk in Chitradurga district.

Chitradurga: The district administration here has been successful in not only setting up “goshalas,” but also earning revenue by selling dung. It has fetched over Rs. 2.42 lakh by auctioning dung collected from around eight “goshalas” in the district.

Realising the problems of cattle owners, the district administration had set up eight “goshalas” in various taluks. Owing to severe drought, cattle owners were finding it hard to procure fodder. Many of them had decided to sell off cattle to slaughterhouses at cheap prices. But the district administration came to their help by setting up “goshalas” under the Centre’s “scarcity scheme,” by spending over Rs 1.13 crore.

The amount collected through auctioning had been deposited in the scarcity scheme account, said Deputy Commissioner Amlan Adiya Biswas.

Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department P. Maheshwargoud said that the department had provided shelter to over 15,000 cattle, setting a record in the State. Over 47,000 tonnes of fodder was purchased to feed the cattle for over 214 days. About four “goshalas” had been set up in Challakere taluk, three in Molakalmur and one in Chitradurga taluk, he said.

Of the eight “goshalas”, the ones in Kudapur and Doddaullarti villages of Challakre taluk and one at Kataral village of Chitradurga taluk were permanent structures. The rest were temporary sheds which had been dismantled. They would be reconstructed next year if required, he said. Mr. Maheshwargoud said that the district was unlikely to face drought problem next year.
