B. Kenchappa has been elected vice-president Chitradurga: Geeta Nandini Gowda and B. Kenchappa were on Wednesday elected president and vice-president respectively of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat. Both of them are from the Congress. Before her election, Ms. Gowda was president of the standing committee on social justice and Mr. Kenchappa president of the standing committee on health and education. Congress majorityIn the 34-member zilla panchayat, the Congress enjoys a majority with 19 members, while the Janata Dal (S) has 12. Two members belong to the Janata Party, and one is an Independent. Though it was clear that the Congress would win both the posts, the Janata Dal (S), to ensure that the former’s candidates did not win unopposed, fielded Minaxi Nadeesh for the post of president, and Tippeswamy for vice-president. Meanwhile, independent member H. Somashekhar, who hitherto supported the Congress, has resigned. It was believed that his resignation was because of the Congress’s reluctance to nominate him to the post of vice-president. Refuting the charge, Mr. Somashekhar told The Hindu that he had resigned because of personal reasons and added that he had many business commitments to attend to. However, he admitted to having had interest in becoming president of the zilla panchayat, but not vice-president.
