Staff Correspondent

HAVERI: A case of violation of election code of conduct by Janata Dal (S) leader and Hirekerur MLA B.C. Patil has been reported in Haveri on Wednesday.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad confirmed that the MLA had violated the code of conduct by engaging in public canvassing even after the stipulated time.

He said according to the report submitted by the Haveri Tahsildar Prashant Nalavad, Mr. Patil and his supporters visited several areas in Haveri, including Vidyanagar, Hukkeri Math, Shivanand Nagar, Ijari Lakamapur, Udaynagar, Daneshwari Nagar and Rajendranagar, in 25 vehicles and made public speeches seeking support for the party candidates from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

On getting information, the tahsildar asked the MLA to stop canvassing and vacate the place.

Clarification

The MLA reportedly clarified that he had made the speeches as his fans and supporters wanted him to address them, Mr. Vastrad said.

To a query, Mr. Vastrad said action would be initiated against the guilty as per the rules. He also said that he would report the matter to the State Election Commission.

According to sources, some of the party leaders and a few candidates were with Mr. Patil during canvassing.

The incident created a flutter in political circles with the leaders of other political parties urging for action.
