HONOURING THE GUEST: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy presents a memento to Singapore Minster of State for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran in Puducherry on Wednesday. PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Wednesday held discussions with Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran on various issues pertaining to industry and tourism including incentives and subsidies offered by the Government of Puducherry to investors. After the meeting, Mr Rangasamy told reporters here that he had explained to Mr. Iswaran the Government’s industrial policy of welcoming non-polluting and less water-intensive units. Mr Iswaran, who invited Mr. Rangasamy to Singapore to study their experiences and tourism projects, stressed the need for the Puducherry Government to publicise their incentives in foreign countries as well. On the issue of distribution of free saris and lungis to people below the poverty line for Deepavali, Mr. Rangasamy said his government had always kept the welfare of the people in mind and it would do what they wanted. On the demand to start a Government cable TV network, he said the government would look into its feasibility. When asked if the government had suffered any revenue loss owing to implementation of VAT, he said revenue mobilisation was as usual now and it was not possible to ascertain if there was any loss at the moment. “If we suffer a loss, we will ask the Central Government for funds,” he added. AICTE team’s visitThe Chief Minister said a committee from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) would visit the Government Engineering College in Karaikal on Thursday and ascertain the infrastructure and other facilities on the campus. The committee would then recommend grant of approval for the college. Medical collegeHe said the government would take steps to start the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Medical College and Research Institute in Puducherry by the next academic year. A committee of the Medical Council of India would visit the college by November for issuing letter of intent he said. Faculty had already been appointed for the college, he added.
