BHUBANESWAR: The city police took about 15 engineering students of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) into custody as they were getting ready for an agitation near Kuakhai river on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. Ignoring police warning that they could not hold agitation anymore, about 40 students started assembling on the river bank in the morning as part of their agitation to press for complete withdrawal of year-back system. City police chased them and caught hold of 15 students. Subsequently, they were brought to the camp of Reserve Police battalion. They were detained there for almost six hours before they were released upon personal bonds. "We had already warned them not to stage any agitation as BPUT had already decided to constitute a committee to hear their grievances. The committee is expected to submit its report within a month," Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarat Sahu said. He said the police could not have given freedom to students to make their points through agitations because Industry secretary Ashok Kumar Dalwai had already heard them on Tuesday. On Monday, students had gathered at the same place saying police administration had not given permission to stage demonstration to put their point of view across to the State Government. Following this the police had organised a meeting between Industry Secretary and students who alleged that their demands were not paid due attention. BPUT students had been on roads for over a month now demanding withdrawal of year-back system. Meanwhile, BPUT constituted the committee that would be headed by B.S. Sastri, dean at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Two students would be taken on the committee.
