Meet held on land acquisition

BERHAMPUR: Land acquisition for irrigation projects in southern districts should be completed within a time frame, said Revenue Divisional Commissioner, southern division, Satyabrata Sahu. The RDC convened a meeting on Wednesday to discuss stumbling blocks in land acquisition for irrigation projects in 10 districts. Engineers, land acquisition officers , director of water resources department H.K.Bisht and Chief Engineers attended the meeting.

It may be noted that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently envisioned that at least 35 per cent of total agricultural land in the State should get irrigated. Mr Sahu said land acquisition is one of the major hurdles in achieving this target. Due to delay in land acquisition several minor as well as medium irrigation projects have got delayed in south Orissa. Due to delay in land acquisition a major portion of funds for the project remain unused which leads to non-submission of utilisation certificates by the State Government.

According to the RDC rural development in KBK districts is intrinsically attached to the irrigation projects.

At present 94 cases of land acquisition for irrigation projects in south Orissa are pending. Similarly 179 cases for which 6(1) notification has been made are also awaiting action. The 4(1) notification involves preliminary investigation regarding land acquisition while 6(1) notification relates to payment of compensation regarding land acquired for public purpose. Seven special LAOs and 12 LAOs are involved in land acquisition process in south Orissa.

He asked the LAOs to initiate legal action against persons putting hindrance to land acquisition.
