Women’s panel takes up 36 cases at adalat

Staff Reporter

Women’s Commission will try to bring back a man from Bahrain who allegedly harassed his wife.

ALAPPUZHA: A special Adalat of the State Women’s Commission held here has decided to contact the Non-Resident Keralites’ Association (NORKA) to bring a man from Bahrain, against whom his wife complained of mental and physical harassment.

The Adalat, chaired by Commission member Meenakshi Thampan was told by the complainant, a resident of Puthenangadi, that the man, whom she married in 1999, was harassing her saying that she did not “give enough dowry” and that she was “not beautiful.” Moreover, her in-laws were not allowing her to enter the couple’s house, which was constructed with her financial contribution too.

Free legal aid

In another case, the Commission decided to provide free legal assistance to a woman who complained that she was seduced by promise of marriage and impregnated by a man who was now trying to marry another woman.

The Commission took up the case after the woman, who said that she had given birth to a child from the relation, complained that the man, though she was living with him, had refused to marry her legally.

The complainant, a native of Karuvatta near here, told the Commission that the man had allowed her to live with him after agreeing to marry her.

However, he was now trying to marry another woman. The complaint is against the man and his parents.

The Commission took up 36 cases for hearing and received two new complaints during the Adalat.
