NAMAKKAL: The district health department has sought explanation from the medical officers in the district following the drastic fall in the number of deliveries in a majority of the districts primary health centres.
Health officials claimed that a PHC would normally carry out 10 to 12 deliveries a month.
But the numbers had started coming down in the last few years.
A number of PHCs had not even reported a single delivery for the past several months, while a few had one or two.
However, the deliveries reported in the private clinics had increased sharply, the officials pointed out.
Detailed enquiry
The department initiated a detailed enquiry and sought explanation from the medical officers of 30 PHCs, Deputy Director of Health R. Sampathkumar said.
He further added that the Village Health Nurses had also been asked to give explaination since all PHCs are equipped with necessary facilities.
These centres receive more women for pre-natal care, but when it comes to delivery, many went to the private clinics, he said.
The government is motivating the pregnant women to approach the PHCs for pre-natal and post natal care, he added.
