Seeking their due: Homeless people of the city under the banner of CPI (M) demonstrating before the tahsildar’s office in pouring rain in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. BHUBANESWAR: Secretary of the Orissa State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday came down heavily on the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party Government for its `failure’ to provide land to the landless, issue BPL cards to the poor and improve the public distribution system. "The ongoing `Mo Jami, Mo Ghara Diha’ (My land, My homestead land) programme of the Naveen Patnaik Government is mere hogwash," Mr. Pati said at a press conference here. Stating that the coalition Government was busy allotting more lands to big companies and other institutions, Mr. Pati said more and more people were losing their land under the present regime. Mr. Pati said, demanding that the Government allot homestead land to landless families and one standard acre of land each to the landless farmers. As regards the PDS system, Mr. Pati said thousands of tonnes of rice meant for distribution through the public distribution system was being looted with the connivance of those running the administration. A survey in Ranpur block of Puri district has revealed that 15 kg of rice was provided to the BPL families every as against the norm of 25 kg. The block had over 20,000 BPL families, Mr. Pati said. DemonstrationThe CPI(M) leader blamed the State Government for not being able to issue BPL cards to thousands of poor families in the State. He also criticised the government for failing to control the prices of various essential commodities, including onion. Meanwhile, the Bhubaneswar regional committee of CPI(M) staged a demonstration outside the Sub-Collector’s office in the city demanding allotment of land to the landless families, issue of BPL cards to the poor families and proper supply of essential items through the PDS outlets. Braving the rains, the demonstrators raised slogans against the government’s failure and said that they would intensify the agitation.
