BANGALORE: The controversy surrounding the alleged attack on Bharatiya Janata Party Minister B. Sriramulu by Janata Dal (Secular) supporters seems to snowball into a thorny issue between the ruling coalition partners at a crucial juncture when the countdown has begun for the transfer of power to the BJP. A day after the episode, the BJP declared that it would totally stand by Mr. Sriramulu even as he created a flutter by accusing that the alleged attack against him took place at the behest of Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy. BJP spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar told The Hindu that: “We are with our Minister and we have taken the incident seriously.” In addition to the moral support, the party also took up the issue of alleged attack against Mr. Sriramulu with the State Election Commission by lodging a complaint with it. In the complaint, the BJP charged the Bellary district Superintendent of Police with having political loyalties and appealed to the State Election Commission to transfer him to hold free and fair municipal polls. It also urged the commission to depute its observers to Bellary district. Meanwhile, the BJP is concerned over Mr. Sriramulu’s public declaration that he would quit the Ministry soon after the municipal polls. Mr. Suresh Kumar said party State unit president D. V. Sadananda Gowda was persuading Mr. Sriramulu to change his decision. “Mr. Sriramulu is an emotional and sensitive person. He might have made the statement regarding resignation in an emotional outburst,” he argued. It is the second time that Mr. Sriramulu is threatening to quit. In April, the Minister had opted to quit expressing dissatisfaction over deteriorating law and order situation in Bellary district.
