Bangalore: State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde on Wednesday rejected the request of the Gadag Deputy Commissioner to postpone elections to the four urban local bodies of Naregal town panchayat and town municipal councils of Gagendragad, Ron and Nargund in Ron and Nargund taluks. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Hegde, who chaired a meeting of political parties and the Gadag Deputy Commissioner, said he had rejected the request as administrative reasons could not be considered as grounds for postponing the election. He said that all the mainstream parties and the Superintendent of Police had advised him not to postpone elections. Mr. Hegde said that everybody excepting the Deputy Commissioner were of the view that all the arrangements had been made and a lot of money had been spent by the candidates. He said that the Deputy Commissioner had sent a report to him requesting him to postpone elections for 5 days on the ground that he required personnel to take up relief operations in the flood-hit areas.
