Bangalore: The countrywide strike by Central and State Government employees on October 30 is in protest against policies aimed at usurping the existing social security benefits for workers, said S.K. Das, national president of the Central Government Employees’ Federation. Speaking at a joint conference of government employees, he said that the Centre was pushing for an “uncertain model” of pension scheme in place of the existing one, which would make the statutory benefit dependent on the vagaries of the stock market. The Government was implementing it through insidious methods, though the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill was not passed by the Parliament, he added. DownsizingThe Government was consistently downsizing jobs in all sectors with a motive of making them unviable and then handing it over to the private sector, said Mr. Vyas. As many as eight lakh posts in Central Government organisations had ceased to exist over the last five years, he added. New pension schemeR. Muttusundaram, joint secretary of the All India State Government Workers’ Federation, said that the new pension scheme was aimed at pushing large sums of money into the stock market. Central Government and several State Governments had put a cap on recruitments, hoping that the Sixth Pay Commission would recommend further downsizing of staff, he added. U.D. Narasimhaiah, president of the Karnataka State Government Employees’ Federation, said that State Government employees should get all the benefits that Central employees will get on account of Bangalore being upgraded to A-1 status from October 1.
