State finds fault with Centre’s estimate of BPL families

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet has decided to convey to the Centre the State’s protest against the new estimate of below the poverty line (BPL) families arrived at by the Centre.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday that the Centre had cut the number of BPL families in the State, getting various benefits, from 25 lakh to 10 lakh.

The Cabinet has resolved that there should be no difference in the criteria and weightage adopted for identification of BPL families in rural and urban areas.

Ramzan fairs

It has approved proposals for organisation of fairs for the supply of essential commodities during Ramzan by the State Civil Supplies Corporation and cooperatives to prevent price rise.

Mr. Achuthanandan announced that cricketers S. Sreesanth and Robin Uthappa, who were instrumental in India winning the Twenty20 World Cup, would be presented Rs.5 lakh and Rs.3 lakh respectively.

The family of forest watcher K.K. Balakrishnan who was killed by a wild elephant recently would be given Rs.2 lakh as solatium.
