Major stations to get high-pressure jets to clean platforms
CHENNAI: The Railway Board has directed all zonal railway stations to launch a special campaign to ensure cleanliness and hygiene on station premises, in passenger trains, railway lines, waiting rooms and other railway premises.
The Board asked them to select ‘clean train stations’ in their areas for mechanised cleaning of nominated trains during their halt in the stations. Garbage and left over food/other catering waste would be collected from trains when they arrive at the stations.
Major railway stations will be provided mechanised high-pressure jets to clean platforms. Adequate number of dustbins and garbage bags will be provided for easy disposal of waste. Garbage generated in coaches/trains will be collected at the end of the journey. Similarly, garbage from station premises, platforms, yards, track in the station area will also be collected on a regular basis.
Trains such as Shatabdi/ Rajdhani will have cleaning staff on board to collect garbage. More health inspectors will be posted in major stations. Cleaning staff will be given special uniforms and protective gear. would be provided would be provided to cleaning staff to motivate them. Zones have been asked to conduct educational publicity campaigns and announcements in stations.
These measures are being undertaken as Indian Railways is observing 2007-08 as ‘Cleanliness Year’.
