Choose alternative route for Sethu project: AIADMK

Madurai Bureau

Condemns CM’s “remarks” against Hindu gods

TIRUNELVELI: Functionaries of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a demonstration in front of the Corporation here on Wednesday protesting the “Centre’s move to destroy ‘Ramar Sethu’ in the guise of execution of Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project”.

The protestors also urged the Centre to choose the alternative route for implementing the project in a bid to save Ramar Sethu and dismiss the Tamil Nadu Government as the Chief Minister had been acting against the Constitution by insulting the religious faith of a larger section of the people.

Reservation

Leading the protest, former Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, said the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, whose government decided to give reservation to minorities to secure their votes, had started levelling “derogatory remarks” against Hindu gods, which should be condemned.

Former Union Minister, Kadambur R. Janardhanan, former MLA, R.P. Adityan, office-bearers of various wings of AIADMK participated in the agitation.

In the demonstration held at Tenkasi, former MLA and party’s legal wing secretary, Manoj Pandian, led the protest, in which former MLAs Annamalai, Murugaiah Pandian, P.G. Rajendran, AIADMK civic representatives and cadres took part.

Tuticorin

The AIADMK cadres staged a demonstration here on Wednesday demanding that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should tender his resignation for making “blasphemous statements” against Lord Rama.

According to the agitators, the Centre should dismiss the DMK Government if the Chief Minister was not willing to step down.

They also condemned the alleged attack on offices of the BJP by DMK party men.

Former Ministers Anitha Radhakrishnan, Shanmuganathan and Jennifer Chandran, MLAs P Mohan (Ottapidaram constituency), L Radhakrishnan (Kovilpatti) and N Chinnappan (Vilathikulam), ex-MLA Daniel Raj, District secretary of Lawyers wing U S Sekhar, spoke.

The traffic along Tuticorin-Palayamkottai was disrupted for about an hour owing to the demonstration.

Nagercoil

Uneasy calm prevailed in front of collectorate here on Wednesday after a wordy quarrel erupted between AIADMK cadres and the police following the seizure of a van fitted with loud speakers.

As apart of State-wide agitation, AIADMK cadres, led by former Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, staged a demonstration in front of the collectorate to protest against the comments made by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi against Lord Rama.

Meanwhile, when the AIADMK cadres held a meeting at the party office to chalk out the future course of action, they came to know that the police seized a van fitted with loudspeaker.

Procession

Angered over this, AIADMK cadres led by the former Health Minister took out a procession from the party office to the collectorate. They had heated arguments with the police for seizing their van.

However the police intervened and explained them that they seized the van only because of not obtaining proper permission. Finally the former Minister asked the cadres to disperse from the scene peacefully.

Later addressing the cadres, N.Thalavai Sundaram said that instead of concentrating on development and welfare activities, the present DMK Government was engaged in kindling the religious sentiments of the people there by creating violence in different parts of the State. Hence he appealed to the people to teach a lesson to the DMK in the coming elections.
