Special Correspondent

Bankers urged to entertain proposals under non-farm sector

THANJAVUR: Banks in Thanjavur district have disbursed credit to a tune of Rs.188 crore during the first quarter from April to June 2007 according to T. Veerappan, Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, the Lead bank of the district.

Speaking at the second district-level review committee meeting of the banks, Mr. Veerappan said that this was against the target of Rs.250 crore which worked out to be 75 per cent of the Annual Credit Plan.

He said that the delayed release of water from Mettur dam was one of the reasons for under performance.

The performance under non-farm sector was not up to the desired level. There is lot of scope for coir-based industries in Pattukottai area. There is ample scope for traditional brass industries and handloom sector in Kumbakonam area. Many number of new windmill fabricating units are coming up around Sengipatti area.

He appealed to the bankers to entertain viable proposals under non-farm sector. He also appealed to the bankers to make good the shortfall in the first quarter of Annual Credit Plan in the coming months.

C. Vijayaraj Kumar, Thanjavur Collector, presided over the meeting. He appealed to the bankers to disburse crop loans to the farmers. He said that new farmers should get bank loans every year apart from old farmers.

N. Kasinathan, Assistant General Manager, Reserve Bank of India, B.V. Baskaran, Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), K. Rajamani, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), P. Vetriselvan, Lead District Manager, IOB participated in the meeting.
