Bhagavathy Amman Temple to be renovated

Nagercoil: It has been decided to to renovate the Bhagavathy Amman Temple at Kanyakumari at an estimated cost of Rs.10 crore, said the president of Kanyakumari Devasom Trust Board, R. Sreedhar.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday he said that the devasom board has adequate stock of gold in a few major temples like Bhagavathy Amman Temple at Kanyakumari, Thanumalaya Perumal Temple at Suchindrum, Kumarakovil Murugan Temple and Neelakandaswamykovil Temple at Padmanabhapuram. By making use of this gold, a golden car would be made with technical assistance and labours from Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation for the Bhagavathy Amman Temple. It has also been also decided to raise the height of Rajagopuram at the entrance of northern side of the temple, construct golden vimanam and install golden flagpole in the temple.

Similarly it has also been decided to renovate the Bhagavathy Amman Temple at Mondaicadu at a cost of Rs.5 crore. A master plan had already been prepared in consultation with ‘Thanthris’ from Kerala. Renovation work to the tune of Rs.5 crore were going on in full swing at Adi Kesava Perumal temple in Thiruvattar.

The present board had managed to obtain a sum of Rs.50 lakh from the Central Government and the same would be utilised for the renovation of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. A sum of Rs.75lakh had also been contributed by various donors for the renovation of Thirvampadi, Kulasekara Azvar and Narasimmar temples and to carry out chemical wash on the mega pillars of the temple.

Proposal

A Rs.50-lakh proposal for the renovation of Velimalai Kumarakovil temple had already been submitted to the Commissioner of the Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. The renovation work would be started once the Government gives its approval, the president of the board said.

The Government used to allot Rs.19.70 lakh as its grant for the maintenance (day-to-day activities) of 490 temples in Kanyakumari district. However to overcome the financial crisis the had Government allotted Rs.1 crore, including the grant of Rs19.70 lakh, last year. The present board members have also urged the Government to give Rs.1 crore every year to ensure proper maintenance of the temples in the district. The amount would be utilised for the renovation of neglected temples, to disburse salary to the employees, conduct of religious classes and for the development of the temples.

The Devasom board has also decided to renovate and conduct kumbhabisekam in 50 temples that came under the jurisdiction of Nagercoil, Boothapandi, Kuzuthurai, Padmanabhapuram and Shencottai temple division in a phased manner.

In the first phase kumabhabisekam would be conducted in seven temples. Renovation work was going on in full swing and kumbhabisekam would be performed in the middle of January 2008.
