This Day That Age
The Naga demand for the constitution of the Naga Hills district in Assam State and the Tuensang Frontier Division into a separate, Centrally-administered unit has been accepted by the Government of India. The nine-member delegation, led by Dr. Imkongliba Ao, President of the Naga People’s Convention, had two meetings with Prime Minister Nehru in New Delhi. With commendable promptitude, the Government issued a statement on the evening of September 25, accepting the proposals made by the Naga Convention held at Kohima last month. The Nagas want Nagaland to be directly under the President of India. According to the statement, Mr. Nehru told the delegation that the new unit would be administered by the Governor of Assam on behalf of the President and would be under the External Affairs Ministry. He also assured the delegation that the Government would give effect to the decision as early as feasible. Expressing satisfaction that the Nagas had abandoned the idea of having independence for the areas they inhabited, he emphasised the need for putting an end to the troubles and disturbances in Naga areas and welcomed the assurances given by the Naga Convention that every effort would be made to this end and for the establishment of peaceful conditions. The leader of the delegation thanked Mr. Nehru for his statement. He promised that he and his delegation, and those whom they represented, would try their utmost to bring about the cessation of hostilities and restoration of peace.
