Letters to the Editor
The decision of the DPA in Tamil Nadu to observe a Statewide bandh on October 1 to demonstrate the people’s desire for speedy implementation of the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project is uncalled for. Since the project has assumed religious dimensions, there is no likelihood of its being completed in the near future. The DMK can, at the most, hope to get some political mileage out of it. However, a day of economic inactivity will prove costly to the State. S. Ramakrishnasaye, Ranipet When there are other avenues to pursue their objective, it is incomprehensible why the DMK and its allies have decided to put the common man to avoidable inconvenience. The only people who will benefit from the bandh are probably government employees and students by way of an extended weekend. V.D.S. Prasad, Chennai The demand for implementation of the Sethusamudram Project is being taken to the extreme by the DMK and its allies. It could be an important project, but it is not the sole life-line of Tamil Nadu, and there is no need for the hapless common man to be punished by way of a bandh. V. Vedagiri, Chennai
