Youth power

This refers to the editorial ‘The power of youth’ (Sept. 26), on India’s victory in the ICC World Twenty20 chanpionship. As you have said, “the biggest revelation was India’s youth power, energised and shaped into a self-confident and happy team by an inspired, intelligent, unselfish and fearless leader.”

Significantly, this is a team of small town boys; there was no domination by big city players, proving that any part of India can produce outstanding players when given the proper opportunities. The win also underscores the need for constant infusion of new blood into the team and the compulsory retirement of those past their prime.

K.V. Ravindran,

The team’s achievement was inspirational and it will definitely motivate other players to perform better in future.

This victory has certainly set a fresh benchmark to be emulated by others in the sporting fraternity.

Your assessment that “a tie would have been a fairer result” was right. India won on the strength of a misjudged shot of Misbah-ul-Haq. Now, both teams have talented young players who excelled in all the departments of the game during the World Twenty20. I hope they will provide entertaining cricket in the future.

Udhagamandalam

The kind of mob frenzy that greeted the team on arrival in Mumbai highlights the bankruptcy of role-models the present generation faces. We should restrain our show of appreciation.

The gifts and large amounts of money being showered on the team and individual players by various State Governments are not necessary. Why did these governments not announce similar prizes when our hockey team won the Asia Cup and when our footballers triumphed in the Nehru Cup?

Rupeh Roshan,

Jamalpur

It is okay for the public to react the way they have reacted after such a great victory but governments should be more objective.

B.N. Gangadhar,

There is no doubt our cricketers have made India proud by their performance. But why such frenzy? It is, after all, a game.

Hilda Raja,

Chennai
