Corrections and clarifications

The first paragraph in an article “Down the garden path” (Op-Ed, September 26, 2007) was: “I write as a partner of India in several important nuclear disarmament initiatives in the 1980s and 1890s ….” It should have been “1990s”.

In a New York Times article “Magna Carta for sale” (Op-Ed, September 26, 2007), the sixth paragraph was “‘This is surprising,’ said Lewis L. Neilson Jr., the chancellor of the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons, a non-profit group in Philadelphia that promotes awareness of Magna Carta, the literal translation of which is ‘Great Paper.’” A reader says that it should have been “The Great Charter”, and not “Great Paper”. Magna Carta (also Magna Charta) in medieval Latin means “Great Charter”, and is literally “Great Paper”. It is also called Magna Carta Libertatum or “Great Charter of Freedoms”.

In “School Notes” (Bangalore, September 25, 2007, page 2), by The Hindu NIE Team, the item “Hindi Diwas” said that Hindi is the national language. It was an error. In the Constitution, there is no language that is termed as “national language”. Article 343 states that “The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script”. “Official language” is the correct term. A similar clarification on this was published on October 12, 2006, and January 11, 2007.

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “[President] Pratibha Patil calls for collective action by developing countries” (September 26, 2007) was: “President Pratibha Devisingh Patil with some of the Pakistani delegates at a reception hosted for personnel attending the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, in New Delhi on Tuesday. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee is to her right.” “Personnel” is inappropriate and jarring, a reader says. It should have been “representatives”.

The first paragraph in the lead story “India wins World Twenty20 Thriller” (September 25, 2007, page 1) was: “Amidst a sea of emotions, India clinched a humdinger by five runs to win the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Monday. Chasing India’s 157 for seven, Pakistan was dismissed for 152 with three deliveries remaining.” It should have been India’s 157 for five. The Sports Desk says that the error was corrected in later editions.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
