Sunny day brightens Kochi’s chances

Principal Correspondent

KOCHI: After weeks of rain, the bright sun brought with it waves of heat here on Wednesday. But nobody was complaining at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.

For it improved the stadium’s chances of having the India-Australia Future Cup one-dayer on October 2.

“Another three or four days like this and it will be great,” said K. Parthasarathy who had come from Chennai yesterday to help out Kerala curator P.V. Ramachandran with the ground work.

Twenty lorries of sand have been brought in and more than 40 workers — nearly three times last week’s number — are sweating it out to repair the slushy spots on the outfield. Large tarpaulin covers — to coat the outfield during rain — are also on their way from Chennai. With the weather clearing, ticket sales are on at a brisk pace at the nearly two dozen Indian Overseas Bank branches, according to P.M. Veeramani, the tickets committee convener.

Nearly 55,000 tickets are on sale with the rates for chairs ranging from Rs 600 to Rs 3,000 while the gallery seats are on offer for Rs 200 (Rs 150 for students, women and clubs).
