NEW DELHI: The DSCL National tennis championship warmed up for the more serious business ahead with an overwhelming response for the men’s qualifying event at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday. With 277 players reporting from all over the country for the qualifying event, the organisers had to subject 29 of them to two rounds of pre-qualifying event just to make it to the qualifying stage. One of the prominent players of the past, Peter Vijay Kumar successfully negotiated the pre-qualifying stage to get to the qualifying draw in which a player will have to win five rounds to make the main draw. Strong fieldMany of the regulars of the ITF professional circuitwill be fighting for the eight qualifiers’ slot in the main draw, from a strong field of 256. Meanwhile, the organisers gave the wild card in the under-18 boys section to Yashwant Pulumati, Saurabh Singh, Shantanu Rajput and Dhruv Gupta. The under-18 girls section will feature the best talent in the country like, Shivika Burman, Kyra Shroff, Sweta Solanki, Janaki Gunuganti, Tanvi Shah, Parija Maloo, Kelsey Sundaram, apart from the recently crowned national junior champion Prerana Bhambri.
