NEW DELHI: In-form International Master G.N. Gopal upstaged Grandmaster Sandipan Chanda to share the fourth spot with seven others, including two Indians, after the eighth round of the Asian chess championship at Cebu City, in the Philippines, on Wednesday. Gopal, a Grandmaster in-waiting, is on 5.5 points, a tally matched by GMs Neelotpal Das and Abhijit Kunte. Neelotpal drew with China’s Zhang Pengxiang, one of the two overnight leaders, on the top board. Kunte got the better of Chinese Woman Grandmaster Shen Yang. Zhang Pengxiang, his Chinese teammate Zhao Jun and Indonesia’s Susanto Megaranto share the top spot with six points. The results (eighth round, involving Indians): Neelotpal Das (5.5) drew with Zhang Pengxiang (Chn, 6); Mohammad Al-Hodiahki (Qat, 5.5) bt Deepan Chakkravarthy (4.5); G.N. Gopal (5.5) bt Sandipan Chanda (4.5); Wen Yang (Chn, 5.5) bt Parimarjan Negi (4.5). Abhijit Kunte (5.5) bt Shen Yang (Chn, 4.5); Surya Shekhar Ganguly (4.5) drew with Javad Alavi Seyed (Iri, 4.5); Li Shilong (Chn, 4) lost to G. Rohit (5); S. Arun Prasad (3.5) lost to Dao Thien Hai (Vie, 4.5); P. D. S. Girinath (4) bt Richard Bitoon (Phi, 3); Efren Bagamasbad (Phi, 3.5) bt M. R. Lalith Babu (2.5); Lanka Ravi (2.5) bt Yueh Wei Po (Tpe, 0.5).
