TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation will take up civic development works worth Rs.10.95 crore in the city utilising the development charges collected through the regularisation scheme for unapproved plots and the allocations made under the Second State Finance Commission Reserve, Equalisation and Incentive Fund. The civic body would plough back Rs.6.43 crore out of the total Rs.7.83 crore collected by way of development charges for regularising the unapproved plots in the City. A major portion of this sum would go for the newly added colonies, where the regularised plots are situated as per the government guidelines, Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman informed the Corporation Council at an urgent meeting here on Wednesday. The rest of the sum collected under the head would be spent in due course. Ninety-three works, including road laying, extension of drinking water pipelines and construction of drainages, would be taken up. The Mayor said that the works have been taken on priority based on the suggestions from the respective ward councillors. “We have attempted to ensure that at least Rs.10 lakh worth of works were taken up in each ward,” she said. Some of the councillors, however, insisted that the development charges collected from a particular area should be ploughed back to the same locality. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor R. Vanitha stated that although Rs.1.10 crore has been collected from Annamalai Nagar in her ward, only Rs.59 lakh is to be spent now. The remaining amount should also be spent for constructing an overhead tank, she said. Mrs. Tondaiman, however, contended that the works taken up from the Corporation general funds in the said areas should also be taken into account. The DMK councillor J. Senthilnathan demanded steps to prevent the flow of sewer into the Cauvery River near Chinthamani, while his party colleague S. Kaleeswaran sought steps to widen the Wireless Road to make it a link road in view of the development of the airport. M. Ranga, DMK, urged the Mayor to construct drainages along the Vayalur Road, which was being re-laid, to prevent inundation of households along the road. Demand to adopt resolutionEarlier, the DMK members demanded that the council adopt a resolution demanding the arrest of Ram Vilas Vedanti for his remarks against the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the Ramar Sethu issue. They, however, did not press the demand after the Mayor said that she could not move such a resolution. Answering a query from O.R. Sriraman of the Communist Party of India, Commissioner T.T. Palsamy said 340 unauthorised hoardings have been removed so far.
