Protest mode: SFI activists staging a demonstration in front of the Kerala University office in the city on Wednesday to protest against the proposed hike in examination fee. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has decided to put on hold the proposal to hike the examination fee for degree and postgraduate courses. The Syndicate of the university, at its meeting on Wednesday, resolved to proceed with the matter only after discussions with student organisations. Though the Vice-Chancellor held discussions with agitating KSU senate members on Tuesday, no satisfactory solution could be found. The agitation by KSU activists in the portico of the University building had prompted the Left-dominated University syndicate to condemn the ‘satyagraha.’ A resolution moved by Syndicate member C. Bhaskaran, which was passed by the Syndicate unanimously, called upon the university to seek an explanation from those who failed to prevent such an agitation from being held on the doorsteps of the University headquarters. The All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), in a press note issued here condemned the Syndicate ‘decision’ to ban demonstrations on the university campus. However, Syndicate members who spoke to The Hindu said no such decision was taken at Wednesday’s meeting. The SFI also took out a march to the university office and held a dharana there on Wednesday. The meeting resolved to direct the T.K.M. College of Engineering, Kollam to not admit students henceforth to the part time B.Tech programme. The Syndicate discussed the issues arising out of admission given to students to this course at the college without complying with formalities related to affiliation. It was decided that the university would appeal to the government to transfer students already admitted to this programme at the TKM College to government engineering colleges. The Syndicate resolved to issue a show cause notice to the college for not withdrawing the affiliation given to the self-financing M.Tech course there. This follows an inspection of the infrastructure facilities of the College carried out by a sub-committee of the Syndicate. The Syndicate meeting decided to authorise the Vice-Chancellor to finalise a date for the conduct of college union elections in the affiliated colleges of the University. It was also decided to sanction an M.Sc Electronics programme at the Mar Thomas College of Science and Technology, Ayoor. The Syndicate decided to grant doctorates to L. Abdul Salam, Deepthi N. Rajendran (Physics); P.V. James, S. J. Shibu Joseph, Elizabeth Kuruvila (Chemistry); K.C. Kuttappan Nair (Hindi); B. Manoj (Sanskrit); C. Venugopal (Management); M.C. Jayadevi (History); K. Nejmi, B. Rameshkumar (Aquatic Biology); A.A. Prasannakumari (Botany); T. Aji (Tamil) and to C.S Sadanandan and E.P. Sudheer (Physical Education).
