KOCHI: Training of volunteers under the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project, jointly promoted by the Union government and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was launched here on Wednesday with 60 volunteers from six wards of the area participating in the programme. Twelve persons from the Kochi City Action Force are among the volunteers drawn from Fort Kochi, Fort Kochi Veli, Amaravathy, Eraveli and Kalvathy. Fort Kochi RDO M.P. Antony, also the nodal officer for the training, inaugurated the programme. Bharat Petroleum Corporation-Kochi Refinery has sponsored the training programme with a contribution of Rs.1.23 lakh. The intensive training programme for volunteers is the continuation of awareness programmes on disaster management. The first day’s training included preparedness for disaster and preparation of a management plan in case of a disaster. The 16-hour certified programme in first aid will be conducted over four half-days. The training is scheduled for October 4, 5, 11 and 12. Training for fire tending and a mock drill will also be conducted. The dates for these programmes are yet to be fixed.
