TIRUCHI: Speakers at a function got up to felicitate students with outstanding academic achievement at Saranathan College of Engineering here on Monday, and urged them to develop additional skills to suit the employability standards in the wake of the current-day globalisation in industrial scenario. They said that educational qualifications should not just be looked upon as a visa for the international job market.
Delivering a lecture on ‘Current IT scenario,’ Infosys’ India Hiring and Campus Relations Head Varadharaj Venkataraman said that information technology was making rapid strides with the participation of global entrepreneurs. Obviously, a sound knowledge of English was imperative for the students as part of their employability skills.
To achieve this goal, students should shun their inhibitions and strive to develop their communication and writing skills in English. Reading of newspapers and watching English news channels on the television would step up their aptitude for current events.
Mr. Venkataraman said that students should feel free to get their academic doubts clarified by faculty members. This would enable the faculty members too to widen the horizon of students’ knowledge. Students, particularly from Mechanical Engineering branch, should visit manufacturing industries, for gaining a practical knowledge on the application of what they learn in their classrooms.
Tiruchi Anna University Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran said that with the faculty and the management of the colleges focussing on academic excellence, the onus of developing communication skills lay with the student community. He distributed certificates and mementoes to toppers in various branches of study on the occasion. Principal Y. Venkataramani participated.
