VIJAYAWADA: Internationals Jaseel P. Ismail, Markos Bristow, Ajit Wijetilekh, Sanave Thomas, J.B.S. Vidhayadhar and Ruth Mishra are among the 115 shuttlers taking part in the four-day Chundru Govinda Raju South Zone Inter-State badminton championship, which begins at the District Sports Authority indoor stadium at Kakinada on Thursday. “Andaman and Nicobar is also participating in the tournament for the first time. Only the men’s team is taking part while women, boys’ and girls’ team have withdrawn,” said K. Ch. Punnaiah Chowdary, joint secretary of Badminton Association of India. The events will be held in men’s category (best of five matches) for the Rahimatoola Cup, women (Chadha Cup, best of three), junior boys (Narang Cup) junior girls (Shafi Qureshi Cup). BAI has appointed S. Muralidharan, secretary, Kerala Badminton Association, as the observer. Maharashtra’s Kaveri Mukund Madhav will be the referee. National chief coach P. Gopichand and Olympian P.V.V. Lakshmi will attend the prize distribution function on Sept. 30. — Sports Reporter
