The children’s park at Kowdiar Junction has become the favourite haunt of many families. The idea of a secure play area — however small — is what appeals to many parents who bring the children here. The presence of security personnel and a ‘flying squad’ vehicle, is quite reassuring for the parents. Though the fact that the park is not well-endowed with play things, even a casual observer can see the healthy give-and-take policy of the young ones who jostle for a place on the swings. Of course, the adults are often called in to referee tearful differences of opinion over who was ahead on the ‘swing queue.’ Many a parent who drops by this green corner has been heard wondering why there cannot be more of such parks in the city. Safe play areas that are free of smokers, anti-social elements and rich in greenery are what the city’s children lack. Will the parents’ wish come true? Going by what has happened to the ‘children’s park’ on the Museum premises this does not seem all that likely any time soon. G. Mahadevan
