Celebrations without a break
It was a throwback to 1983 when India won the Prudential World Cup cricket tournament. On Monday night, parts of the city erupted into spontaneous celebrations after the Men in Blue scored a wafer-thin victory in the finals of the first ICC World Twenty20 championship. Young and old turned up to join the celebrations.
At many places, youths roamed the streets cheering their cricket heroes.
They burst crackers and distributed sweets. Many had their faces painted in the colours of the national flag. Festivities broke out in the suburban areas also.
The celebrations spilled over to the subsequent days with political, social and cultural organisations and sports clubs vying with each other to keep the memory of the first Twenty20 championship fresh in the minds of the public.
