PANAJI: The Congress in the State is facing a problem over the choice of the candidate for the byelection to the Mormugao (South Goa) parliamentary constituency to be held on October 30. While the local party unit has asserted that it would field its own candidate, Churchill Alemao, Minister for Public Works and president of Save Goa Front (SGF), the regional outfit presently in the coalition but had fought the Congress in the recent State Assembly polls, is seriously pushing the case of his daughter, Valanka Alemao, for Congress ticket. The byelection is held as Mr. Alemao had resigned as south Goa Congress MP ahead of the June 2 Assembly elections to float the SGF and fight the Congress. He subsequently contested the Assembly election from Navelim constituency where he defeated Congress leader and former Industries Minister Luizinho Faleiro while another of his candidate defeated the then Speaker Sardinha, who is currently the Pradesh Congress president. SpeculationMr. Alemao’s stance that his daughter would get a Congress ticket only triggered a speculation that the Congress central leadership might have assured him that as part of package while saving the its Government earlier.
