AMBUR: The Tamil Nadu Assembly Assurances Committee, led by Panruti MLA Velmurugan, visited the Government Hospital here on Thursday and inspected the premises and facilities.
The panel members were “shocked” over the poor environment condition on the premises.
The members faulted the staff for burning hospital waste, that had been piled up in the backyard.
Mr. Velmurugan told the Public Works Department and the hospital to clean the surroundings in two days.
He also expressed displeasure over the lack of adequate water supply on the premises. The Government has allotted Rs. 7 lakh for overall maintenance of the hospital and the PWD should float a tender and begin the work immediately, Mr. Velmurugan said.
Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav and Tirupattur Sub-Division Collector Ashish Kumar accompanied the committee.
The team then visited the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) under the control of Ambur Tanners’ Association.
Mr. Velmurugan told the members of the association that a majority of tannery units and companies failed to follow the pollution norms and were letting out untreated effluents into the Palar.
“The Centre has allotted Rs. 67 crore for the CETP and it was the duty of the committee to review as to whether the funds have been properly utilised. All 44 companies in Ambur should treat effluents through the CETP. The tanners’ association should ensure zero discharge,” he said.
Members of the committee include Gudiyatham MLA Latha, Arcot MLA Elavazhagan, Conoor MLA Soundarapandian, Saathankulam MLA Rani Vekatesan and Ponneri MLA Balaraman. Vellore MLA C. Gnanasekaran, Vaniyambadi MLA Abdul Basith and Ambur Municipality chairman Nazeer Ahmed were also present.
