Six of family held for self-immolation bid

Lucknow: Six members of a family were arrested on Thursday for attempting to self-immolate themselves allegedly due to pressure from a bank to pay off a loan in Hazratganj police circle.

Shiv Kumar Gupta along with his wife and four children sprinkled kerosene to set themselves ablaze but were arrested before they could do so, police said.

The family’s immolation bid near Darulshafa building here was to attract attention of officer on special duty to Chief Minister Mayawati, who resides in the building, they said.

Gupta was allegedly facing harassment from a nationalised bank due to his inability to pay off a loan he had taken, police added.
